New Brunswick Drug Plan to be reviewed

A comprehensive review of the New Brunswick Drug Plan will be completed and the mandatory requirement for New Brunswickers to have prescription drug insurance will be eliminated, under an act introduced today at the legislative assembly.

“Our government is committed to reviewing the New Brunswick Drug Plan to ensure that its costs are reasonable for individuals, its coverage is sufficient and employers are not subject to a required contribution,” said Health Minister Victor Boudreau. “Our government will also provide additional premium relief to lower-income individuals to ensure costs, for those that choose to join the New Brunswick Drug Plan, are fair and reasonable.”

Forestry agreements released to the public

The provincial government is fulfilling another commitment in Moving New Brunswick Forward by publicly releasing a series of forestry agreements signed last summer which gave private companies increased access to Crown land.

“The previous process lacked transparency and failed to share information with the public when it comes to our Crown Forests,” said Natural Resources Minister Denis Landry. “We are going to change that starting today by posting these documents online so that the public can assess them.”

Opportunities New Brunswick will open April 1

Legislation will be introduced today to establish a new crown corporation called Opportunities New Brunswick, which is intended to lead the way in job creation and economic growth in the province. Point Lepreau Generating Station

The Point Lepreau Generating Station operated at 100 per cent reactor power during November, putting about 660 megawatts on the New Brunswick grid.

The net capacity factor for the month was 100 per cent. Capacity factor is the megawatt-hour output of a generating station compared to the maximum that could be produced. The station's monthly target for the fiscal year is 94 per cent.

In November the station produced about 48.8 per cent of the total net generation from NB Power generating stations.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed

The Premier's Council on the Status of Disabled Persons held its annual event today in recognition of the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

For more than 20 years, the day has been recognized to encourage people, organizations, governments, and societies all over the world to focus upon issues related to the inclusion of persons with a disability and on measures to support greater equality. The theme for 2014 is Sustainable Development: The Promise of Technology which promotes the removal of barriers specifically related to information and communications technology.

Legislation introduced to reduce small business taxes

FREDERICTON (GNB) – Legislation was introduced today to decrease small business income taxes in New Brunswick beginning Jan. 1, 2015.

The amendments to the New Brunswick Income Tax Act will allow the government to implement a small business corporate income tax rate reduction which had been announced in October.

The rate will decrease from 4.5 per cent to four per cent.

"Our government recognizes the importance of small businesses in job creation and economic growth,” said Finance Minister Roger Melanson. “We want to help our small businesses succeed so that they can become more competitive, have more money to invest in developing new products and services, and become bigger players on the export market.”
